Multichoice NG appears In Court due to Package Increments

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja is set to assemble today to address the case involving Multi-choice Nigeria, a leading Pay- TV operator, concerning the recent price hikes on its DSTV and GOTV packages.

The tribunal’s decision follows a motion filed by Nigerian citizen Mr. Festus Onifade, represented by Barrister Ejiro Awaritoma, seeking to terminate the subscription rate increments imposed by Multi-choice Nigeria Ltd.

Last week, a tribunal chaired by Saratu Shafii granted interim relief to Mr. Onifade, restraining Multi-choice from implementing the price adjustments until the motion on notice (marked CCPT/OP/2/2024) is heard and determined.

Multi-choice had earlier notified subscribers of the impending price adjustments, citing increased operational costs as the reason behind the decision. Nonetheless, despite the interim injunction, Multi-choice proceeded with the rate adjustments on May 1, 2024.

The tribunal has summoned all involved parties to appear for the hearing and determination of the motion on notice today at 10:00 a.m. Regulatory bodies such as the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) may also be involved in the review process.
