Nnamdi Kanu agrees to any FG condition resulting to his release

The embattled leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has agreed to abide by any condition the Federal Government would assert resulting to his release from detention.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe revealed the latest development on Wednesday during a meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, alongside other South East senators.

Sen. Abaribe disclosed that the meeting was bordering on the release of Kanu, adding that he is optimistic that the AGF would consider and persuade the Federal Government to release the detained IPOB leader.

According to him, the continued detention of Kanu has been the root cause of the prevailing insecurity and crisis in the South East region, emphasizing that growth in the region will continue only when Kanu is released.

Meanwhile, earlier, the Governors from the South East had resolved to request for Kanu’s freedom from President Bola Tinubu.

Also, about 50 members of the House of Representatives from different parts of the country, have urged the President to release the detained IPOB leader.

The Background 

Kanu was first arrested on October 14, 2015 upon his return to Lagos from the United Kingdom on charges bordering on Treason and Sedition, including conspiracy and terrorism.

Although, the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako had granted him bail on health ground on April 25, 2017, making it 18 months in detention.

With the bail conditions fully met, he was released from the Kuje prison facility on April 28, 2017.

He had then escaped from the country midway into the trial after soldiers invaded his country home in Umuahia, Abia State in an exercise which led to the death of some of his family members and supporters.

Fast forward to June 19, 2021, Kanu was again arrested in Kenya and was renditioned back to Nigeria to face trial on June 27, 2021.

Upon his return, the trial court, on June 29, 2021, remanded him in custody of DSS, where he remained till date.
