Rt. Hon. Deacon Chike Okafor, Ph.D., representative of Okigwe South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu.
In a moving tribute, Hon. Okafor hailed Prof. Nwosu as a forward-thinking leader whose efforts significantly influenced Nigeria’s democratic development.
As the former chairman of the National Electoral Commission, Prof. Nwosu is celebrated for his role in overseeing the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election—often regarded as the most transparent and credible in Nigeria’s history.
In his message, Hon. Okafor commended Prof. Nwosu’s lasting contributions to the electoral system, especially his introduction of the Option A4 voting system and open ballot method, which set new standards for transparency and integrity in elections.
“Prof. Nwosu’s dedication to an accountable electoral process created a legacy that continues to motivate our nation,” Hon. Okafor stated.
In addition to his public service, Prof. Nwosu’s influence extended to the academic world, where his work at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, inspired numerous students and enriched political science research.
Hon. Okafor noted that Nwosu’s scholarly contributions will resonate with future generations and continue to inspire hope for a democratic Nigeria.
Expressing his condolences to Nwosu’s family and those who knew him, Hon. Okafor conveyed the collective sense of loss across Okigwe South, saying, “May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy remain as a guiding light.”
Hon. Okafor’s statement reflects the broad respect for Prof. Nwosu’s contributions to both Nigeria’s public and academic spheres.
