Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the formation of a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to review the assets and liabilities of the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The committee, to be inaugurated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe. Anslem Ojezua will serve as deputy chairman, while Frank Edebor will act as secretary.
Other members include Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick Idiake, and Rasaq Bello-Osagie. Additional appointees are Fredrick Unopah, Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, and Abass Braimoh.
Governor’s Commitment to Accountability
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, on Sunday. Itua emphasized the governor’s commitment to building a transparent and accountable administration.
“In furtherance of the governor’s initiative to set the state on the path of development and accountable leadership, the establishment of a State Assets Verification Committee has become imperative,” the statement read.
Itua noted that despite calls for a comprehensive database of the assets and liabilities of the previous administration, the Obaseki-led government provided only limited information.
“This committee is a response to the governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity and transparency. It comprises respected sons and daughters of Edo State, chosen for their expertise and integrity,” the statement added.
Mandate of the Committee
The committee’s terms of reference will include:
1. Verifying all state-owned assets acquired during Obaseki’s tenure.
2. Investigating any discrepancies in asset declarations.
3. Compiling a comprehensive database of the state’s assets and liabilities.
4. Recommending measures to recover or secure assets improperly managed.
The committee’s work is expected to shed light on the financial health of the state and provide insights into governance practices under the previous administration.
Public Expectations
Political analysts and civil society groups in Edo State have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward ensuring accountability. They urged the committee to carry out its work without fear or favor.
