#EndBadGovernance: Amnesty International Accuses Nigerian Police, Urges Tinubu to Ensure Justice

Amnesty International has accused Nigerian security forces of using excessive force during the #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1 to 10, 2024.

The demonstrations, which were organized to demand better governance and economic reforms, reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 24 people across six northern states: Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Niger.

This was disclosed by the Country Director of Amnesty International, Isa Sanusi, during a media briefing in Kano.

The event also featured the presentation of a report titled, “Bloody August: Nigerian Government’s Violent Crackdown on #EndBadGovernance Protests.”

The report documents violent attacks on peaceful protesters and highlights cases of police brutality.

According to Sanusi, among those killed were 20 young people, two children, and an elderly person.

The victims were reportedly shot at close range, with many sustaining injuries to critical parts of their bodies. Survivors also suffered from gunshot wounds and exposure to excessive tear gas.

“People in Nigeria witnessed unbelievable lawlessness as security personnel fired live ammunition at protesters.

“The death toll could be higher than 24 due to alleged cover-ups by the authorities.” Sanusi stated.

The report provided a breakdown of the casualties, including 12 deaths in Kano, three in Jigawa, and one in Katsina.

In Kaduna, a minor was reportedly shot dead by a soldier, while three people were killed in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Another three were killed along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State.

Sanusi called on President Bola Tinubu’s government to ensure accountability for the actions of security forces and conduct independent and transparent investigations into the allegations.

“Nigerian authorities must ensure access to justice and effective remedies for victims and their families,” he emphasized.

Amnesty International further criticized the police and military for denying wrongdoing despite public evidence.

The organization demanded that those responsible be brought to justice through fair trials.
