FG, Labour to resume ‘wage’ negotiations on Friday

In continuation of wage negotiations, the Committee meeting on the new minimum wage will reconvene on Friday, May 31, 2024, as the Federal Government extended the invitation to Organised Labour.

The scheduled meeting will be the seventh in the series of meetings by the committee, with references to new minimum wage proposals.

The Federal Government’s proposal of ₦60,000 was rejected, with Labour insisting on ₦494,000 as the new minimum wage.

Labour had initially demanded a ₦615,000 minimum wage but reduced it to ₦494,000.

The TUC leader, Festus Osifo made remarks, stating that the new proposal does not fit the nation’s economic realities.

“So, for us, we completely reject it. We want the government to be serious. Let them come and give us a breakdown of how a family is going to live with the minimum wage of ₦60,000,” he said.

According to the NLC President, the proposals by the government were unsubstantial as “workers don’t have any economy”.

The amount of remuneration that an employer is required to pay wage earners for the work done is termed, Minimum Wage.
