Minimum Wage: Labour union’s strike across board

Maritime workers have shut down operations nationwide in compliance with the strike directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC on Monday.

An official of The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) disclosed this on Monday, explaining that all port facilities and operations have been closed till further notice.

Also, The Aviation union in compliance with the labour union’s standards, has directed its members to suspend their services across airports in the country till further notice.

Going backwards, the organised labour had proposed a strike from Monday, June 3 due to the failure to reach an agreement with the leadership of the National Assembly on Sunday.

The meeting between the pair had been a last minute attempt to salvage the hopes of a national strike which would shut down the nation’s economy.

However, due to the deadlock between the Federal Government and the unions over a new national minimum wage and reversal of the recent hike in electricity tariffs, the Labour unions decided to commence the proposed strike.

The talks had failed as a result of Labour’s rejection of government’s offers with the newest being N60,000. And again Labour insists on ₦497,000 as the new minimum wage.

Consequently, The the national grid has been shutdown by organized labour as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that there would be a nationwide blackout.
