Minimum Wage: Labour considers N100,000 as new wage

The Labour unions, according to sources, is likely to accept a N100,000 minimum wage proposal.

This development follows meetings held by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage for the 5 days period.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement issued by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim on Saturday emphasized that the proposed minimum wage would result to burden on the Nigerian economy.

However, Labour went further to initiate a strike with the complete shutdown of airports, banks, public schools including courts. 

In response, the Federal Government were pressured to meet with the unions regarding solutions.

This resulted to Labour suspending the nationwide strike as the President agreed pay a national minimum wage higher than N60,000 with the wage committee pledging to convene daily until an exact amount is agreed upon.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu charged the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun to put up a framework of costs with regards to a new minimum wage within two days.

The Labour unions had vowed to denounce any insignificant addition to the N60,000 offer by the tripartite committee, with President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo insisting that the new minimum wage must be equal in purchasing power to the value of N30,000 in 2019 and N18,000 in 2014.

In his remarks, the Minister of Information and National Orientation guarantee that a new minimum wage will be presented to Nigerians in one week.
