Nigeria is poised to make a significant impact at the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The nation will showcase its grassroots-driven initiatives aimed at combating desertification and fostering environmental resilience, highlighting the critical role of local efforts in addressing global environmental challenges.
Restoration Efforts in Focus
One of the standout contributions comes from the En Aawa Trees Foundation, which has spearheaded an ambitious reforestation campaign across Nigeria.
In 2024 alone, the foundation planted over 2,000 trees in degraded areas, particularly in the Northeast region, as part of its mission to restore biodiversity and mitigate climate change effects.
These efforts align with the UNCCD’s Great Green Wall Initiative, a pan-African ambition to reclaim and restore lands in the Sahel region.
By adopting a community-led approach, En Aawa has successfully mobilized local support to create long-term solutions to desertification.
Local Knowledge Meets Global Collaboration
The Executive Secretary of the UNCCD, Ibrahim Thiaw, has repeatedly emphasized the importance of integrating local expertise into global sustainability frameworks.
Nigeria’s grassroots projects, such as those championed by En Aawa, provide a blueprint for leveraging community involvement to scale environmental impact.

Collaborations between the foundation, government agencies, and local communities have not only accelerated tree-planting initiatives but also enhanced public awareness of sustainable land use practices.
Youth at the Helm of Change
Ahead of COP16, Nigeria has also intensified its focus on empowering young environmental advocates.
A webinar titled “COP16: Saudi Youth Expectations and Opportunities” brought together stakeholders on November 13, 2024, to discuss themes such as sustainable land use, the green economy, and youth leadership in climate action.
Organized by Vision for Sustainable Africa, the webinar spotlighted the role of young Nigerians in shaping innovative solutions to land degradation.
The outcomes from these discussions will contribute to the Fourth Youth Forum Joint Statement, amplifying youth voices on the global stage.
Driving Global Impact
As COP16 unfolds, Nigeria’s participation underscores its commitment to scaling local solutions for global challenges.
The conference provides an invaluable platform to share success stories, explore partnerships, and influence policies on sustainable land management, afforestation, and climate change mitigation.
Nigeria’s engagement serves as a powerful reminder that grassroots action, when combined with global collaboration, can drive meaningful change.
Through initiatives like those of the En Aawa Trees Foundation, the nation is demonstrating how localized solutions can play a pivotal role in securing a sustainable future for all.
